Business Scholars Visit NYC
On April 17-20, 43 students traveled to NYC to meet with Fisher College of Business alumni, visit businesses, and experience cultural events. Throughout the year, students participated in several workshops including a Business Etiquette Dinner and Networking with Appetizers to prepare professionally. In preparation for business meetings, students were divided into teams, researched and presented about aspects of the companies including historical, financial, community involvement and career possibilities.
After arriving in the Big Apple, Fisher College of Business External Affairs arranged a dinner meeting at Macy's Headquarters. The students met several alumni from Macy's and other companies, and met Terry J. Lundgren the Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer Macy's, Inc. He graciously enlightened the group with advice and personal experiences.
The following day, students visited Ernst and Young Headquarters in Times Square, where they received an energized presentation about the company. The Business Scholars were also graciously enlightened by a partner in the assurance department, campus recruiters, and Fisher alumni who toured the facilities. Later, they returned to Macy's to meet with Fisher alumni Doug Kondrath and Hana Niki who gave a presentation about their role in the merchandising group within Macy's as well as provided a tour of the buyer room. The alumni also engaged the scholars in discussion about how to be a successful business student.
During free time, Business Scholars took advantage of the cultural events in the city: taking tours, seeing Broadway shows and enjoying Central Park.

Fisher Students Win Inaugural
Big Ten Leadership Case Competition
On April 12, an Undergrad Case team coached by Dan Oglevee won first place in the Inaugural 2008 Big Ten Leadership Case Competition. The event was held at the University of Wisconsin and sponsored by Accenture. Members of the winning team included: Michael Bookmyer, Robert Nicholson, Luba Osadchy and Matt Ricciardi. Second place was awarded to the University of Michigan, and third place went to the University of Iowa.
Teams were presented with a Harvard Business Case based on the management and strategic issues that Best Buy has faced over the years and had two and a half hours to analyze the case and prepare a presentation that featured both key strategic and leadership challenges along with an appropriate action plan. The judges unanimously gave the top award to OSU and commented that the teams’ succinct action plan and Q&A set them apart from the competition that included strong teams from both Michigan and Northwestern.
Congratulations to Dan and all team members for their excellent work and positive representation of Fisher College!
Fisher Students Win Logistics Case Competition
Our students did it again! Fisher students have won the last 3 logistics case competitions in which they have participated. This time it was the Starbucks team of Isaac Elking, Michael Rieman, Tada Yamamoto, and Greg Yitsis and the event was the April 4, 2008 TLA Logistics Case Competition. Eight teams competed, including Michigan State, Univ. of Maryland, Syracuse and the Univ. of Arkansas. Teams were given a case in the morning, had 6 hours to prepare their solution, and then presented it to a panel of industry judges. The case was written by managers at Dow specifically for this event and focused on ways that Dow could shrink the carbon footprint of their supply chain operations.
Special thanks to the TLA officers who worked very hard to make the event successful.

On the nationally televised cable show, mtvU “Quad Squads,” a team of Fisher students gave the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business team a lesson on how to execute a winning marketing strategy. Over an eight-week period beginning in September, an mtvU camera crew filmed the work of the four Fisher students for the four-part series. The conclusion aired on Nov. 27 with both teams presenting their plans and the results of promotional events to Ford and advertising executives at company headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.
As the winning team, all four students were offered internships at Ford and prizes that included an Apple iPhone with two years of free service and a laptop computer. All four episodes can be viewed on the Quad Squads Web site.
